It’s a remarkable reversal of fortune for Earth Fare, made possible probably because of COVID-19 and the hefty new profits generated by the grocery industry as more people stay home and cook.

New Leases on Life for Earth Fare

In February, the Asheville-based company said it was saddled with $65 million in debt, closed all 50 of its stores and laid off nearly 3,300 workers after filing for bankruptcy protection. Barely six months after filing for bankruptcy and closing all its locations, Earth Fare plans to reenter the Charlotte market and open as many as five stores in the area — possibly by the end of the year. Asheville, North Carolina-based hospitality and medical facility management company Hulsing Enterprises, which purchased Earth Fare this past March in the wake of the retailer’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, has been quietly reopening Earth Fare locations across six states. Months after abruptly revealing it would close its corporate office and all 55 of its locations across 10 states and begin liquidating its assets, natural food retailer Earth Fare made a low-key comeback in one of its former key markets, Charlotte, North Carolina, opening a store in SouthPark on Oct. 7. Under new ownership, the stores will continue to stock natural and organic foods and put a premium on customer service.

When they heard of Earth Fare’s liquidation, Talley, Derrough and others sprang into action because they always believed in the idea that shoppers are hungry for natural foods. The new team picked up three stores and the company name in a March bankruptcy auction and have been working ever since to sign new leases on some of the old Earth Fare locations. The new company now operates 11 stores, including one in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and hopes to have 25 by the end of the year, Talley said. They’ve assembled a team of experienced grocery executives who believe in its vision and want to stick to its roots. But Talley, known in Charlotte as the owner of the old Talley’s Green Grocery in Dilworth (now Fresh Market on East Boulevard), started working old investor friends and former organic grocery executives in Asheville to try to buy some of the former locations.

Buy natural, sustainable and chemical free products from local sellers across the country. Meanwhile, in April the chain sold some store leases to Southeastern Grocers' Winn-Dixie chain (Boynton Beach, Jacksonville, Lakewood Ranch and Viera, Florida); Whole Foods Markets (South Asheville, North Carolina, and Chattanooga, Tennessee); and Aldi (Tallahassee, Florida). At that time, Hulsing, which purchased leases in Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia, said that it also intended to reopen seven stores in South Carolina; currently five are open. At the time that Earth Fare disclosed that it would shutter all of its stores last February, it had seven locations in the Charlotte area. “It was kind of a quick open,” Betsy Bevis, Earth Fare’s director of marketing, told the Observer, adding that the grocer has already held “quick and fast” openings for 13 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia and Michigan over about 15 weeks. The company also wished to keep crowd size low to keep shoppers safe during the pandemic.

Healthy Journey

Earth Fare has adopted such safety measures as mandatory face coverings; continually sanitized register belts, carts and baskets; designated entrances and exits, social- distancing floor markers, nightly deep cleaning; and shields at the registers between customers and cashiers. “They must have grown too fast and opened stores that they probably shouldn’t have opened,” founderRoger Derrough told the Ledger in February. He started Earth Fare as a small store called “Dinner for the Earth” on Merrimon Avenue north of downtown Asheville in 1975 at age 24.

Best Neighborhoods to Explore in CLT

coves edge ln charlotte nc

Having transformed a long way from farmland, Barclay Downs is now one of Charlotte’s most prestigious neighborhoods. Cherry is a Charlotte hood that is a sister neighborhood to Myers Park. When John Myers originally sold part of his farm his goal was to create a great suburb for people to live in. Loaded with great-looking bungalows, the streets of Cherry are lined with mature trees and sidewalks.

Elizabeth

A large portion of the neighborhood is located on the National Register of Historic Places as the Elizabeth Historic District. The neighborhood contains two major hospitals and a number of historic places that have been converted into new restaurants, shops, and offices. With much of Elizabeth being developed in the early 1900s the trees that line the streets have had plenty of time to mature giving the bungalow-style front porches a great look, feel, and some added privacy. If you enjoy a walkable place to live, Elizabeth is a good option with its close proximity to businesses and most Charlotte neighborhoods. From the late 1800s to the mid-1900s, Charlotte offered electric streetcar services. Today, the neighborhood is part of the Charlotte LYNX light rail system and is located minutes from Uptown, the airport, and major highways.

First Ward

This home has a unique wooded yard, and is located on a premium lot, offering seclusion and privacy. You will be amazed the moment you enter the two-story foyer providing an abundance of natural light, exquisite hardwoods, and a ground floor secondary bedroom, full bath, office, mud & laundry rooms. Enjoy waking up to wooded views from the primary bedroom. The primary bath has a luxury shower & garden tub, dual closets. Upstairs is a third bedroom, full bath & loft/bonus room area.

Uptown

You are not required to use Guaranteed Rate Affinity, LLC as a condition of purchase or sale of any real estate. Operating in the state of New York as GR Affinity, LLC in lieu of the legal name Guaranteed Rate Affinity, LLC. The neighborhood is one of the hottest places to buy a home as the home prices are quite a bit less than those in neighboring suburbs.

The Gourmet eat in kitchen includes KitchenAid appliances, soft close cabinets, pull out shelves & a large granite kitchen island. Chantilly is another great Charlotte neighborhood nestled between a couple of other popular suburbs, Elizabeth and Plaza-Midwood.

Highland Creek

The neighborhood of SouthPark has an estimated population of 18,000 which makes it peaceful at night and noticeably busier by day. Home to University Research Park, one of the biggest research parks in North Carolina, as well as the PNC Music Pavilion. In 2009 Ikea opened its first and currently, its only store in the Carolinas, in the University City neighborhood.

John Springs Myers, a local farmer who owned a lot of the land in the Charlotte area carved off part of his land to form the neighborhood of Cherry in 1891. His next dream for his land was to create an elegant Charlotte suburb, which would soon become a reality, in Myers Park. Many years of planning went into Myers Park as talented minds joined forces to make this dream come to life.

Dilworth is one of the best neighborhoods located in Charlotte’s Mecklenburg County. The neighborhood is home to Charlotte’s first streetcar suburb, and it was in the 1890s by Edward Dilworth Latte. Often referred to as the eighth ward, Dilworth was planned similarly to the other four wards with its grid-like style pattern. With charming Victorians and quiet streets lining the historic district you will have quite a variety of housing choices.

The prestige of the Myers Park neighborhood is what many locals know as an area of fine homes, tree-lined streets, sidewalks, and home to many of the Queen City’s wealthiest residents. The neighborhood is an important piece of Charlotte’s history and the city’s growth. Home to many of the textile, banking, and utility leaders that developed the area well into the twentieth century. Myers Park is a historic district neighborhood in Charlotte that is often considered to be the most affluent and reputable in Queen City. Neighboring hoods include Dilworth, Sedgefield, Eastover, Foxcroft, and SouthPark.

A vibrant and funky neighborhood, Plaza-Midwood is locally known as a great spot for restaurants and exciting culture. A great neighborhood for everyone and especially desirable to a first-time home buyer in Charlotte. 109 people are moving to Charlotte each day, and these same folks are searching online for information about the best neighborhoods in the area. Within its unofficial borders, University City has a population of 160,000 (including Harrisburg and Concord). A great neighborhood within walking distance of Uptown’s dining, employment opportunities, and events. The Fourth Ward is experiencing a large amount of commercial growth as well that is beautifully blended among the quaint neighborhoods, condos, and retail spaces. On the outer edges of the third ward are historic bungalows and modern condos, townhomes, recreational fields, and dog parks.

The Palisades is a new neighborhood in Charlotte NC with tons of new home construction and amenities that will dazzle. Nestled high on the peninsula above Lake Wylie it's a fantastic neighborhood and golf community. For anyone who is looking at new construction homes in Charlotte, The Palisades is a great neighborhood to look into! There are so many great things to love about the Palisades in Charlotte it's worth its own blog post. Midtown is centrally located between Uptown and the residential neighborhoods of Cherry, Elizabeth, and Dilworth. Connecting Midtown to Freedom Park and Dilworth is a greenway called The Little Sugar Creek which has future plans to connect to the First Ward, Uptown, and Cross-Charlotte Trail.

The Charlotte suburb has a population of around 1,500. The Eastover neighborhood is one of Charlotte’s finest historic suburbs and is located in the southeast Uptown, Charlotte area. The Mint Museum of Art is one of Eastover’s main community attractions with it are, artifacts and the history of Charlotte.

3D Printed Houses Changing The Way The World Is Built

print house

SQ4D, previously charmed the world in January 2020 when they built the then world’s largest 3D printed home, but now it’s charming us again, as they officially announce the first 3D printed home to receive a certification of occupancy in the US. The building will contain 4,090 square feet of live-in space and hold five apartments and a basement. Construction began on March 19th, 2020, and took around three weeks to print, but Kamp C believes future homes can be completed in just two days.

Prices of 3D printed houses: no cheaper than traditional homes

It’s made from specially formulated concrete with nano polymers that harden faster than normal concrete. Within the first 24 hours, it registers at the standard hardness of a brick house, and after 28 days it’s hardened to that of a bridge. The next level up from that are companies that offer prefab ‘turn key’ homes to choose from, and the best of those will let you make modifications to meet your specific needs.

Coolest 3D Printed Robotics Projects (2024 Update)

The prototype 3D printed house built cost the companies approximately $10,000, though they assert that this number can be brought down to $4,000 going forwards. This administrative building comprises two floors, featuring beautiful 3D printed architecture born out of an ongoing collaboration between Russian 3D printed house company Apis Cor and the Dubai Municipality. Our current manufacturing facilities are in Canada, so the best idea of pricing I can give you at the moment is maybe $200 to $300 per square foot CAD, but of course labor and material costs vary by region. Building materials have seen a massive increase in price lately, that hasn’t helped matters either for determining cost.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL.STUNNING QUALITY.

Joining forces this time with developer 3Strands, ICON has used its Vulcan technology to construct four multi-story buildings in East Austin ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet, featuring modern open plans and timeless interiors. Apis Cor’s build brought 3D printed structures into the public eye, encouraging others to get involved and democratize 3D printed house building. For the time being, 3D constructions are mainly made of mortar-concrete or plastic, materials that have a heavy environmental impact. In terms of costs, several articles consulted speak of a 50% cost saving for the "house". It would seem that the savings are only in the wall structure, since only the walls are printed (and that it would be more like 10-20%, due to the cost of labor, which is less on a printed structure).

3D Housing 05 – Milan Design Week 3D printed building

In poorer areas with few skills builders and little building material available, large house printers such as those by ICON and New Story offer a fantastic way to build basic huts and 3D printed shelters. If able to use locally source material, this reduces building costs dramatically, allowing for shelters to be built for those who need them most. There are a variety of architecture design software tools for creating 3D models of buildings. Architecture firms use 3D printing to create miniature versions of future building projects, and house 3D printers themselves create buildings based on 3D models. 3D printed houses are likely not as cheap as the companies who have built 3D printed houses claim they are. They only list the cost of the house in terms of the materials consumed to build it, omitting key factors such as labor, the cost of the printer (renting or buying), interior and external finishing, and wiring, pipes and other key foundations.

Prominent 3D printed house constructor CyBe Construction created the house with their concrete 3D printer; able to print a single wall in between 60 to 90 minutes. Like New Story’s plans for the developing world, this interesting prototype may form the basis for building houses in poorer countries. In more deprived areas where the imminent problem is shelter rather than wiring and pipes inside houses, these cheap 3D printed houses offer an effective solution to a real crisis. Many sprayed (or printed) foams can have potential health impacts - which is why we tend to stay clear of them. For many media outlets, one reason for 3D printed houses is to help people struggling to find housing, since they are supposedly cheaper and faster to build (which is not necessarily the case, as we just saw).

Design My Business Cards

According to the team the house cost just over $10,000 to build, including the furnishings with windows and doors, though we will discuss why these figures may not tell the full story further on in this article. A document published by COBOD, a Danish company that is a global leader in 3D printing solutions for the construction industry, warns consumers by taking stock of what 3D construction is really like today. For example, it mentions the company Winsun, which claims to have built 10 3D buildings in 10 days. In fact, they assembled 10 buildings in 10 days, from 3D printed components produced in a factory long before. State of the art technology, innovative team members and purpose-built systems are all in place at Print House so we can effectively assist you and your business to achieve the results you expect. From creation of your design through to printing, whether it be using an offset process or digital technology your project will receive the attention to detail it deserves.

Many of the people attached to the project have a track record of execution and success, so we look forward to seeing the project’s progress. Since the Texas project they have also printed a series of 3D printed houses in Mexico. Probably the most famous and viral 3D printed house build, this interestingly shaped house was built back in 2017 in just one day – while it snowed!

Moreover, the University of Tartu, Estonia, with the Estonian University of Life Sciences, have collaborated to create a low-cost 3D printed house concrete material made primarily of peat which could reduce the material cost of building a house by up to 10x! Additionally, because peat is so common it could be dug up locally — such as in deprived third-world countries — and used to build houses, so materials do not have to be shipped there. In July 2018, a French family moved into their new four-bedroom home, becoming the first family to live in a 3D printed house. This was a collaboration between the city council, housing association, and the University of Nantes.

print house

We like a lot of those options, but our favorite are prefab kit houses for sure, especially those that meet LEED or Passive house performance levels. As for the one that you mentioned, nothing stands out as being particularly fantastic about it, in fact the diagram on the main page seems a little redundant, what’s with the OSB sheathing as well as ZIP structural sheathing? Cheaper than two layers of sheathing would be swapping one out for an exterior peel and stick WRB membrane. So we call for caution when it comes to believing everything you might find online about 3D printed homes being "the" solution to the challenges facing the North American construction industry. If the figures are far from reality, it is because the information conveyed omits the fact that these times concern only the main house walls!

Dubai is always making headlines for being ambitious and outlandish in its declarations of future goals – none more so than their claim that 25% of buildings will be built using 3D printing by 2030. And they’re backing this up with action; this office — claimed to be the most advanced 3D printed building in the world — cost roughly $140,000 to build (not including finishing details) and took 17 days. New Story is Co-Founded and advised by some very powerful and successful people, including Glassdoor’s CEO, and Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian.

Bella Hadid no longer the face of Charlotte Tilbury's lipstick range and plans to launch her own cosmetics company

Charlotte Tilbury Dancefloor Princess Kissing Lipstick ($37.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a soft, light-medium pink with warm undertones and a luminous sheen--a smidgen of pearl, some glossiness. The consistency was lightweight, creamy with moderate slip, and it felt a bit "wet" as it went on, though I didn't experience feathering or the product moving beyond my lip line. For as emollient as the shade was, I was surprised that there was only a touch of product that got into my lip lines, which I couldn't see when I looked in a mirror in person. It had good pigmentation that applied fairly evenly with three-hour wear time. Charlotte Tilbury Coral Kiss Kissing Lipstick (£23.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a brightened, medium coral-pink with a satin finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage, and the color applied evenly and smoothly.

“I love this formula because it adds a subtle shine to the lips without having to use a gloss. So you can get that on-trend lip gloss effect without any of the stickiness or risk of transferability,” he says. The lipsticks also give a contouring effect, which Buckle shares is excellent for red carpets. “They’re like your lips, but better—more defined, symmetrical, and full,” states Buckle.

Darlings, contour your lips in one single swipe for a fuller-looking, velvety soft Hollywood pout! My Hollywood Lips in Charlotte Darling is a buildable, light beige nude shade glides on seamlessly like a gloss yet feels completely weightless – like lingerie for your lips! This shade is a creamy beige nude, my personal Hollywood shade. I have both Hepburn Honey and Penelope Pink. I love both but find I get more wear from Penelope Pink.

There are definitely a lot of similar shades within this type of finish (there are so many that I’ve omitted mattes, but I don’t doubt that there would be matte shades with a similar coloring). The Kissing formula is supposed to be pigmented and luminous, while also being hydrating. It has a creamier, lightweight consistency that's comfortable to wear and to apply with a moderately hydrating formula to back it. I find that some of the creamier shades can sit in my lip lines a bit, but it really depends on the shade on how noticeable it is in person.

Ms Hadid, whose property developer father Mohammed Hadid, 75, is Palestinian, has courted controversy for online posts expressing her support for people in Gaza. Duplicate a high-end product or never buy the same shade twice.

Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks wear well and feel nice on my lips. Can’t wait for her matte lippies to arrive stateside. Cosmetics brand Charlotte Tilbury has parted ways with Bella Hadid as the face of one of its incredibly popular lipstick ranges.

The honey colour just makes a face look unfinished. Charlotte Tilbury Dancefloor Princess is a moderately warm-toned, light pink with a cream finish. It is a permanent lipstick that retails for $37.00 and contains 0.12 oz. It's very wet and never drys so its messy and bleeds on me.

Peach lipsticks are often a bit too pale for me but this one looks like it might work. Need help finding your perfect foundation shade? She has normal-to-dry skin with occasional dryness on cheeks and nose. She has a light plus skintone with subtle, warmer yellow undertones (view her foundation matches here).

I love PP, its just the right shade of nude for my skin tone. I usually stick to reds and mauves, but I really like her formula. It’s creamy, helps my lips stay moisturized during the day. I usually have drier chapped lips in the fall/winter months.

The wear ranges from three to five hours (reds and the like). There's a faint, sweet vanilla scent but no discernible taste. According to Buckle, pink lips are having a moment. “From the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice to the Emmys, pink lips have been dominating red carpets! ” Now, just like Chastain, you can have the perfect pink pout (or red, if that’s your shade). Each collection will feature five lipsticks within the shade range, costing $35—the new products launch on Tuesday, January 23rd, exclusively on CharlotteTilbury.com.

“Jessica wore a gorgeous chartreuse Gucci gown, so we knew we wanted to play with neutral and pink tones to keep the makeup glowing and fresh. We went for taupe on the eyes paired with a structured, strong brow. We finished the look with a wash of pink blush and an enhanced, natural lip for a timeless finish,” Buckle shares exclusively with ELLE.com. Charlotte Tilbury Yes Honey Kissing Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium peach with warm undertones and a luminous finish. It had rich, opaqued color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly. This shade wore well for four and a half hours, while the formula was lightly hydrating and creamy enough to glide on without tugging.

She is famous, like Dolly Parton, for sleeping in her makeup. Her eyes sparkle as she speaks with the runaway, chatty energy of a hostess welcoming you to a party. Tilbury says, “I don’t want to see invisible women,” so her products make eyes look brighter and complexions more dewy, and are known for creating an intensely glamorous effect. Love bite is definitely my colour – and yours too Christine.

It wore well for four and a half hours, and it was neither drying nor hydrating when worn. Actress Jessica Chastain arrived on the red carpet at the 2023 Emmys in a neon green Gucci gown. However, throughout her attention-grabbing look, she hid a really big (and exciting) beauty easter egg, creating one of the night’s best Emmy Awards beauty looks . Make sure to scrape the sides of the bowl so that the butter and sugar mix well. It’s important that the butter and sugar are creamy at this stage, but the mix doesn’t have to be too fluffy. Both are added for flavor for the gingerbread cookie. Due to the strong flavors in gingerbread dough, vanilla isn’t necessary. I use less cloves because I find ground cloves can easily overpower the gingerbread house flavors. How to Make a Gingerbread House Recipe

I find large houses difficult to construct and decorate. This is where it really helps to have more than two hands working on a house, and why making a gingerbread house is so much more fun with company than alone. If you are working on this alone, it may help to grab some canned goods from the pantry and use the cans to help prop up the pieces while the icing mortar is drying. This gingerbread house making project requires a trip to the candy section of your local grocery store. You can decorate your house with whatever types of candy please you.

Repeat the process with the back wall and a second side. The exact time will depend on how thick the icing is applied, but it should be dry to the touch. Baking and decorating a gingerbread house is one of the sweetest traditions of the season. And if you have kids home for the holidays, making a gingerbread house together can be a great way to get the whole family into the holiday spirit.

How do I cut out gingerbread house pieces?

The dough and gingerbread is very forgiving! It's not necessary, but I also recommend scoring the cuts before baking and then fully cutting them while hot. Place the candies, icing, decorating bags and decorating tips off to the side. Unwrap the gingerbread house pieces and make sure they have no cracks or chips.

😊 Just make sure the gingerbread, frosting, and candy are properly handled with clean hands, and the house was covered while being completed. It’s also crucial to use meringue powder to make royal icing. Raw egg whites don’t have a great shelf life. This is why my recipe for royal icing for gingerbread house uses meringue powder. It’s more shelf-stable and safe to eat even after a few days at room temperature.

If the dough is soft, then I recommend rolling it out between two pieces of parchment paper (Image 23). While the dough is chilling, prepare the gingerbread house template. You can even do this the day before, to save time.

Step 17 – Assembling the side walls of the gingerbread house. Choose the base on which you will build the gingerbread house. A cake board works well, but you can also use anything else that is food-safe and flat for a flat surface. Add the flour a little at a time, and mix it in by “pulsing” (turning on the mixer in short bursts) the stand mixer on low speed (Image 9). This will prevent the flour from flying everywhere, and the dough from being overmixed.

My journey isn’t over, even though I’ve completed six rounds of chemotherapy and undergone surgery. I wonder where I’ll end up at the end of all this, on leave from my job and pulled from my life in D.C. I worry about my friends with cancer as they fight their own battles, and the other young people trying to understand why this happened to them.

Place both pieces of the roof on top where they go and gently press into place. Use a can to support the roof as needed. Let the house dry for at least 30 minutes before decorating. Pipe a thick layer of icing on the second wall piece and put it in between the front and back of the house, opposite of the other wall. Use cans to help support the structure as needed and let this much of the assembled house sit for 15 minutes to allow the icing time to harder. Here’s the video tutorial to guide you along.

How to Make a Gingerbread House recipe + template + more!

how to make a gingerbread house

I got gingerbread house ideas from the experts regarding both made-from-scratch houses and houses that come in a kit. Follow along as I share my newfound expertise in the form of step-by-step instructions, so-smart hacks and creative decorating tips. Another popular option for gingerbread house windows is to use isomalt. This is a type of sugar substitute that you can sometimes buy in craft stores. If you want to keep your house to decorate with year after year, a homemade gingerbread house could last for several years or more, if packed and stored carefully. While this fun baking project is technically 100% edible, it doesn't exactly taste amazing.

To make door and stained-glass window, with front wall still on parchment paper, replace front wall pattern piece (with door and window cut out). Carefully cut small door opening from front wall and remove cutout; set aside for later. Using a 1 1/2-inch circle cutter, cut small opening for window near top of front wall; remove cutout and any crumbs, and discard. In small resealable food-storage plastic bag, place two clear hard fruit candies, and seal.

Recommended Equipment

You should now have all four walls assembled. To put your house together get a flat surface like a cake board, cutting board, or cookie sheet. Take the end of a gingerbread house (one of the pointed end pieces) and pipe a thick line of icing along the bottom. Royal icing is the “glue” that holds the house together. It’s also the glue adhering any candies to the walls and roof.

Making windows in gingerbread houses

With lightly floured 2- to 3 1/4-inch and 1 1/2-inch round cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes for gingerbread men and women, trees and stepping stones. Transfer to large parchment-lined cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until firm in center; transfer parchment with cutouts to cooling racks to cool completely.

Any remaining space can be used to cut out the chimney parts, and other gingerbread shapes you like. Place the template on the cardboard and use a bench scraper to make sure that the template is stuck to the board with no bubbles or wrinkles (Image 18). Let it dry for a few minutes (Image 19).

My Canadian Cookbook with same recipe does not call for drying the gingerbread slabs out at all. I found once baked, they were hard enough, that if you wanted to use them once cooled, you probably could. Print out the template and cut out the shapes. The chimney is totally optional, but I think it’s a cute addition. The joy is really in the making, of coming together to work on all the steps that are required to build a gingerbread house from scratch.

Here’s how you make gingerbread dough and the pieces for the house:

If you plan to build a house just for display, appearance and aroma are more important than flavor, so choose a stiffer dough like this Construction Gingerbread. It has the flavor and aroma of a cookie meant for munching, but with a texture that’s a bit firmer and tougher than other recipes. This is ideal if you’re building a complicated design or if you want to display your gingerbread house for a long time. For the base of the gingerbread house choose something flat and sturdy.

Stand up two walls at a time so they support each other. Starting with an end wall and side wall, pipe a thick L-shaped line of icing on the prepared base to secure the bottoms of the two walls. Place another line of icing where the walls meet. Use your hands or a sturdy object like a can or box to support the walls while they set. With royal icing, this should only take a few minutes. The icing is set when the pieces hold steady without sliding apart.

How to Decorate Gingerbread House

Instead of using royal icing as the "glue," you can heat 2 cups white sugar in a large skillet over very low heat until melted. Carefully dip gingerbread pieces in the syrup, being careful to avoid contact with it as it is very hot and sticky. The syrup cools immediately and is unforgiving. There is no comparison to store-bought icing over our fluffy homemade gingerbread icing. It’s a must when creating a gingerbread house recipe!

Almost 20 years ago I was spending one of my first Christmases away from my family while serving as a missionary for my church. A family from our congregation invited the missionaries over for a gingerbread house decorating party and it was so much fun! It was the first time I had ever decorated a real gingerbread house and I was put in charge of making the royal icing to act as the cement glue for the houses. Why else would we go to all that trouble?

Make one big house together, or a few different mini houses. Vanessa Greaves is a Senior Editor at Allrecipes with nearly two decades of experience helping home cooks gain confidence in the kitchen. A self-taught cook who grew up reading cookbooks for fun, Vanessa lives and breathes the challenges faced by busy everyday cooks to get dinner on the table. The art of making a gingerbread house doesn’t have to be difficult to master. For small candy items, like these tiny gold stars, add a dot of frosting on the back and use tweezers to add them to the house. Add icing to the bottom of the house front panel and the bottom of the side pieces, as well as the sides.

Next, you’ll see how I designed the templates for my own house, so you can make your own template. Then, I’ve provided step-by-step photos showing how I assembled my house. And lastly, you’ll see how I added all the finishing details like clear windowpanes and royal icing snow drifts.

Use a paring knife or X-Acto blade to (carefully!) cut clean lines. Once they've baked, re-cut the shapes so that the sides are nice and sharp. Alternatively, you can buy a set of cookie cutters that cut out all the pieces for you by just pressing down. The metal construction helps keep the edges clean. Of course, you can also turn to tools that do all this work for you.

If necessary, reroll scraps, and continue with cutouts. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until firm in center; transfer parchment with cutouts to cooling rack to cool completely. To add the roof panels, pipe icing along the top of the walls.

The room has a couple of padded chairs and uses special lights to set the mood, although there are no juices or special teas available during your wait. Passengers can work with their therapist to pick out the oils and scents they prefer. Features, materials, finishes and layout may be different than shown.

Located lower bow, the Classic Veranda Suite offers all the comfort and attention to detail that you can expect aboard both inside and out. But perhaps this suite's finest asset lies just outside, as floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a private veranda, making every sunset feel as if it is yours alone. But perhaps this suiteÂ’s finest asset lies just outside, as floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a private veranda, making every sunset feel as if it is yours alone.

R1 Royal Suite One-bedroom

The Royal Suite boasts a lavish living area perfect for entertaining, plush interior furnishings and sweeping seascapes from the private terrace. Even travelers on luxury cruises expect plenty of lounges, chairs, and outdoor deck space for sunning or relaxing. You won't find an aqua park or water slides since this ship is quieter and more adult-oriented (although it does have a children's room and outdoor play area on deck 9). The two Royal Suites on the Silver Muse are found forward on deck 7. These suites measure 1130-square-feet but expand to 1528-square-feet when combined with an adjoining Veranda Suite.

Symbols designate what type of activity you'll be doing -- Sotto Voce or Expedition, for example -- and they'll also let you know the activity level and whether wheelchairs are permitted. Not all excursions or coaches can accommodate wheelchairs, but passengers can work with a shore excursions concierge to book private wheelchair-accessible excursions. Silver Muse will provide an aide for solo wheelchair travelers, for a fee.

Dolce Vita is the main lounge and occupies a large space on deck 5. It has a bar, comfortable seating, and is the home of the Shore Excursion, Future Cruise Planning, and Reception Desks. Panorama and Dolce Vita usually feature live music before and after dinner.

ALL CRUISE LINES (1543 SHIPS)

Complimentary self-service launderettes are located on decks 4 through 11. Passengers also can pay for laundry, pressing, dry cleaning and alteration services. A sun deck, featuring additional lounge chairs and seating areas, is found on Deck 11. Decks 7, 8 and 9 have sitting areas at the back of the ship. There's a putting green outside the Panorama Lounge on Deck 9. Cruise geeks will note that the space is named after Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking Cruises.

Delivered in the spring of 2017 the new ultra-luxury ship was built by Fincantieri and at 40,700 grt accommodates 596 guests. Located next to La Terraza on deck 7, Silver Note is the cruise ship's supper club, with small plates and tapas on the menu. The dinner experience includes a jazz and blues singer and the sometimes even a little dancing. The Grand Suites have all the amenities of the Royal Suites but feature a king-sized bed that can be made up as two twin beds rather than a queen-sized.

The decor has a strong point of view in that it's so simple. You won't find anything that makes you stop and say, "Wow!", but you'll just genuinely appreciate that everything is comfortable and quietly elegant. Silversea's "flight and cruise" package deals (by the company's "Silver Sky" program) are inclusive of the luxury cruise fare, discount round-trip airfare (Economy Class) and airport-pier-airport transfers.

Printed, condensed versions of newspapers are also available. Passengers also can have two visitors in ports of call, but requests (made through the reception desk) require at least five days' notice. Silver Muse has a solid selection of services, covering everything from shore excursions to laundry. The bulk of activity takes place on Deck 5, where you'll find the guest relations and shore excursions desks as well as a future cruise consultant, who can assist passengers with future cruise purchases.

The thermal suite is not large; it lacks cohesion and is missing accoutrements we've seen on other ships, such as heated ceramic loungers. Passengers can book excursions online or with their travel agents from 90 days to a week before they sail, but they also can book onboard at the shore excursion desk or through their butlers. Paperwork explaining each excursion is left in your cabin or you can see it at the shore excursion desk.

The fitness center has many different types of exercise equipment. Personal trainers are available for one-on-one training sessions in the gym, and exercise classes are held each day in the fitness center. La Dame is the specialty French restaurant on the Silver Muse and has a bespoke dinner menu developed by top chefs from the Relais & Châteaux team. As expected, the menu is filled with rich French food featuring interesting sauces and combinations.

The Classic Veranda Suite provides generous living space for voyagers. Located lower bow, the Classic Veranda Suite offers all the comfort and attention to detail that you can expect aboard — both inside and out. A generous expanse of interior comforts — elegant décor, stunning marble bathroom and ample seating area, make this a cosy home away from home. But perhaps this suite’s finest asset lies just outside, as floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a private veranda, making every sunset feel as if it is yours alone.

Or am I mis-remembering that it was ever possible? I've never purchased one before, what was hoping to pick a few up on my Feb cruise since I am clearly addicted at this point. Wherever and whenever you choose to cruise, why not take advantage of the CruiseNext program to save money on your current cruise? After all, if you love to cruise, it's never too soon to start planning your next adventure. However, it’s well-documented that if you don’t spend it onboard you are only charged $250 for two CN certs. The cruise next OBC they give you comes off the original charge if you don’t use any of it. Always re-verify that amenities aren't changed or lost, etc. afterward. Going through a TA we had to have the TA apply the third CN certificate for a 2023 sailing, but all I had to do was email them and they did all the work. I would do a mock booking for FAS to see how that works out.

However, I'm not able to find an FAQ or Term indicating that non-refundable OBC can't be used to pay the daily service charge. I found it in an NCL blog from 2017, so I think it's been pretty well known non-refundable OBC can't be used for DSCs. The "pre-publication" rumor I saw only indicated 3- 4 days if I remember correctly. There are times when, as a CAS guest, my total expenditure is less than $500.

The onboard booking perks do not apply to cruises shorter than three days, world cruises, Grand Voyages or segments of those longer sailings. If you need to cancel the cruise you booked on board, you can apply the deposit to another voyage but you'll forfeit the onboard credit. Book your next cruise with the future cruise consultant on board a Holland America ship and you will get onboard credit and pay a reduced deposit. Amounts vary based on length of the booked cruise and cabin category. Celebrity Cruises' onboard booking program offers two options — Book Now and Book Later. Both offers give you initial deposits as low as $100, as well as up to $500 in onboard credit (based on cabin category and length of sailing) on your next cruise.

The best things about Virgin Voyages' My Next Virgin Voyage program

Although it may be difficult to find deals at first, once you know where and when to look, it becomes much easier. Yes....I just applied the 3rd to a booking we made on June 5th, which already had 2CN's applied. You were lucky - my 2nd one keeps getting returned when I make a price adjustment to a reservation. But no worries, I just put it back on when the "any cabin" special comes back the next month. But one is purchased on the ship and one is not. Usage terms and $$ value amounts can vary too.

If you miss that cutoff date, again, you may lose the deposit. DW and I have purchased 16 on each of our last two cruises. All but two of those 32 are currently applied via double up offers to future cruises. The deposit can be used on bookings made within the next two years.

Day Northern Europe from London to Reykjavik: Iceland, Norway & Belgium

Each cruiser may purchase four $300 deposits, each of which can be applied one per booking on future cruises for you or your travel mates. The deposits are transferable once to another traveler. Current promotions have doubled the Sailor Loot to $600 until further notice. Not only will an onboard booking almost always involve a lower deposit to hold the cruise, but it likely will get you the best available promotional offer and earn you valuable onboard credit. Savvy cruisers often max out onboard opportunities by booking all their cruises on board or by paying open-ended deposits on future cruises they can book at their leisure.

Carnival's Future Cruise Vacation program

I booked our cruise yesterday not  knowing about the double up. However, when you go to pay it asks you if you want to use your coupons /credit (not sure what the terminology was) and states that you can click on and use any 2. Since they were also offering an extra 10% off that counted as one of my “coupons”. Placeholder reservations cannot be used on select cruise sail dates, including those taking place over major holidays. They may also not be used for guaranteed room categories (where Disney chooses your cabin location) or combined with other rate specials.

I'm on the phone with a booking agent with the website, and she's applying it to a pre-existing reservation that I booked 7 months ago. No other cruise line offers extra loyalty program points for booking on board. When you are on board a cruise ship, you can save on your next cruise and the one you're on by purchasing CruiseNext deposits in either $250 or $500 denominations.

I have a reservation for an October 2023 cruise. Assume I know nothing so walk me through the steps please! I just went onto their website and made a payment of $250, choosing one of my deposits as the payment type, after already having two deposits applied. If I cancel and rebook my room, the DSC will be higher than it is today. But it still may be several hundred dollars savings to use certificates.

It will be applied first to your CruiseNext Credit purchase before being applied to any other fees in your onboard account. Book your next MSC cruise on board a ship, and you'll receive $20 to $200 in onboard credit per cabin, based on the length of the sailing booked and the cabin category. You can also earn double points with the MSC Voyagers Club loyalty program.

I couldn't use two certificates when trying to do my reservation on line, but the NCL rep was able to use both certificates on each cruise when he made the reservations. If you’re going to book a cruise with NCL, and don’t have a Cruise Next in your account, it makes sense to buy a Cruise First before booking the cruise. Plus, folks in vacation mode already have their wallets open, ready to spend on more fun. And yes, if you cancel the cruise before final payment, the certificates are returned back to your account. You can view your existing certificates in  your online NCL account to see their expiration dates. I was on an online chat with the website I booked it through (CruisesOnly), and that online chat agent was wrong.

You'll get Early Saver rates with price protection, upgrades, 50% off standard deposits and up to $50 per stateroom or up to $100 per suite in onboard credit. Carnival World Mastercard Review The Motley Fool

carnival cruise mastercard

You can redeem your Carnival Credit Card rewards points by signing in to your online banking account. The Carnival Credit Card reward points will be credited to your account at the close of the billing statement in which you make your qualifying purchase. You should note that while your credit score is an important factor, there are plenty of other things that will impact your chances of being approved for the Carnival Credit Card, too.

How do I use my FunPoints to book a Carnival cruise?

Whether you work with an individual travel agent or a large online agency, onboard credit is a standard promotional bonus common in the industry. And the larger the agency, the deeper their pockets when it comes to onboard credit. Loyalty is noticed; if you've worked with the same travel agent for every cruise, your OBC amount is likely to build over time. Whenever you spend money with Carnival Cruise Lines, you’ll earn two points per $1.

Our credit card methodology

Premium eateries also include some cafes and bars like Coffee Bar, JavaBlue Café and the RedFrog Pub. Perhaps the most common out-of-pocket expense for many cruisers are the shore excursions offered by the cruise line in ports of call. Naturally, you always have the option to venture off on your own and forego Carnival's tours. But if you have the OBC to spare, it may be worth considering using it on one of the shore excursions offered by the line. Similarly, if Carnival is forced to cancel or modify an itinerary for whatever reason, they will typically offer passengers a few options. As with any credit card, it’s crucial to analyze your spending before choosing a credit card.

The ongoing rewards are mediocre

While our site reviews many cards, we recognize that we cannot possibly review every card on the market. Opinions are usually divided when it comes to using internet onboard a ship (did you come to disconnect, or will you be glued to the outside world?). If you must have the comfort of an internet-ready device, Carnival offers several connectivity plans that can be paid with OBC once onboard. This may mean that you could risk missing out on some of the most popular tours if they're fully booked by the time you embark. We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best card recommendations. Since Carnival travels to so many foreign ports, it's nice for cardholders to know they won't have to pay a foreign transaction fee as long as they make purchases with their Carnival® World Mastercard®. To bump the rewards of being a Carnival® World Mastercard® cardholder, 10% of the cost of shore excursions is returned in the form of a statement credit. Overall, the Carnival Credit Card is a good option if you are a fan of Carnival Cruise Lines and World's Leading Cruise Lines. Apart from some pretty generous rewards, the card also comes with a $0 annual fee and a 0% foreign transaction fee.

This card has no annual fee and has a recommended credit score of at least 700. Upon account approval, we will send you a Guide to Benefits which includes a full explanation of coverages and details regarding specific time limits, eligibility and documentation requirement. Sitting by the pool listening to the wind as the ship cuts through the water is the essence of cruise travel. To get there, consider getting a Carnival World MasterCard Credit Card by Barclaycard to earn rewards towards your next cruise. The Ascent is a Motley Fool service that rates and reviews essential products for your everyday money matters.

However, the card's earning rates aren't the best, and you might do better using a general travel card to rack up points or cash back. The card's terms note that if you don't have enough points to redeem for the full purchase amount, you'll be able to redeem only in $50 statement credit increments between $50 and $5,000. A 0% for 15 billing cycles offer isn't a lifetime, but it is enough time for a cardholder with a plan to transfer high-interest debt and pay it off before the 0% intro offer expires. Yes, the Carnival Credit Card does have travel insurance benefits, the best of which are trip interruption insurance and emergency evacuation.

In the right hands, the Carnival® World Mastercard® could become a favorite.

Where To Spend Your Carnival Cruise Line Onboard Credit

Active and retired military members are always eligible for reduced rates, but OBC isn't included in this permanent deal; you'll have to be on the lookout for time-limited promotions in order to snag the credit. Another sure-fire way to earn those precious credits is by investing in the company, a common perk among major cruise lines. At Carnival, you're entitled to $50 OBC on cruises of 6 days or less, $100 on cruises of 7-13 days and $250 on longer if you own a minimum of 100 shares. Just keep in mind that the card charges a balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of the transfer, whichever is greater. The bonus points help mitigate the cost, but don’t do it just for the points. If you do plan to apply for the card and have high-interest credit card debt, seriously consider using the card’s balance transfer promotion.

The credit card is not linked with the VIFP club, meaning that cruise goers will not be able to earn extra benefits like priority boarding or cabin upgrades. This card does not offer rewards on other travel, such as booking flights or purchasing gas. The goal of credit cards is to make them work for you without draining your checking account. The fact that the Carnival® World Mastercard® has no annual fee is a step in the right direction. Carnival Corporation and UK bank Barclays have renewed their partnership, allowing guests to save for additional statement credits onboard and points for further discounts.

The Carnival cruise credit card's two big highlights are that it has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. Cardmembers also receive a 10% discount on shore excursion packages (taxes and fees not included) when purchased on Carnival.com prior to sailing. Unless you’re frequently setting sail with qualifying cruise lines, it will take you a while to rack up points. Other no-annual-fee travel credit cards earn bonus rewards in everyday spending categories — like dining or groceries — or they may simply offer a high flat rate, like 1.5% back on purchases of any kind.

With the Carnival™ World MasterCard®, the most important factor is how much you spend on Carnival cruises. If you’re loyal to a travel brand, getting these special perks can be worth it. Before you choose one, though, consider the whole package, including rewards, fees and other features. The Carnival Cruise credit card earns FunPoints, which are different from the VIFP Club points you can earn from Carnival's cruise loyalty program. Frequent Carnival Cruise Line cruisers looking for ways to get a discount on their vacations might find some value in the Carnival World Mastercard, issued by Barclays.

When you get your rewards, your redemption options are limited to Carnival and some other cruise lines. When a credit card charges an annual fee, you have to do extra math to make sure you’re getting enough value out of the card to make it worth the cost. In some cases, co-branded credit cards offer exclusive perks specific to the partner brand.

Frequent cruise goers can easily redeem FunPoints for a free or discounted cruise based upon the amount of FunPoints they earn.

0% Introductory APR on balance transfers that post to your account within 45 days of account opening. Get 10% back as a statement credit when you book a Carnival shore excursion on carnival.com prior to your cruise. Unless you cruise with Carnival multiple times a year, you won’t get many chances to earn bonus rewards with this card.

Once you've submitted your application, you should get an answer instantly. However, it can sometimes take up to 14 days for the issuer to reach a decision. If you're approved, you'll have your new card in the mail within 7-10 business days. Sometimes, however, you can end up with an onboard credit in more indirect ways. You'll get the best value by redeeming your FunPoints on eligible Carnival purchases and onboard amenities.
